"All things are possible" I love the outdoors, travelling, animals and people. I was an ardent hiker, and this allowed me to visit some of the most amazing hiking trails in South Africa. What inspires me most is the ability to positively impact the lives of others through the plethora of skills I have acquired over the many years of experience. I have the ability to add value wherever I am placed. I am energised by strategy, new challenges, and the search for the most efficient and impactful solutions. My career began in education. As an educator I enjoyed the children. I know this will always be part of who I am as I will always be passionate about teaching and will continue sharing knowledge, mentoring, and coaching, etc. I ventured into the corporate environment as I excelled with my financial skills and thought that my career would entail the chartered accountant route. I did the required academics, got the job, and my focus was numbers and more numbers. Again, I was challenged because my love for people was not satisfied. I once again did a complete change in my career by studying, job shadowing and taking on projects in the learning and development and human resource departments. One of my memorable periods was asking the CFO of the organisation to give me the opportunity to split my job in two areas to show my capabilities and therefore be considered for a position that was eventually created for me. This was exciting and I thrived in this environment. I felt like I was adding value as the position focused on the growth and development of the youth, once again. I knew that I could accomplish more and add more value through venturing out on my own. I started my own business which offers the services of learning and development, strategy, human resources and finance. This has been an exciting journey with many challenges.
I have been involved in the music industry for the better part of my life. As a performer and creator, I have had the opportunity to entertain many people over the years. I have a great passion for music and the arts in general. As an avid reader, I take great pleasure in immersing myself in the prose of those who are highly skilled in the literary arts. This stood me in great stead when I embarked on a course in Journalism a million years ago. Although I never completed the course, certain skills have stuck with me to this day. My journalistic endeavour was eclipsed by my musical passion. A passion that has given me much joy and also lead to much heartache. Nonetheless, being a staunch collector of music, it wasn’t long before I utilised this collection, and branched out into spinning records on dance floors around the country. Having grown up in Cape Town, South Africa, in the ‘80s, I was embroiled in the struggle for freedom. Battling the apartheid regime. This struggle, which was so much a part of everyday life, gave me a sense of something bigger than myself. A sense of community and belonging to something that was more important than my own personal well-being. Generally speaking, I would like to believe that I am an artist at heart. When I say that I don't mean that I like to draw or paint or any of the other physical manifestations of art. What I mean is that I approach life as art. If that makes any sense. I am the proverbial Jack of all trades. Master of a few. I think my biggest asset is that I am always willing to learn. That is something that I intend to keep doing until the last breath escapes my body.
Live and love as if there is no tomorrow! Hi, my name is Emmerentia. I was born in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa, in the ‘60’s, which means that I'm an original, retro hippie chick at heart with the good, old-fashioned values to back it up. The highs and lows I’ve dealt with in life have taught me a valuable lesson…time is not guaranteed and is therefore not to be lost. I am enjoying my journey, still learning new life lessons and growing to become the person I am meant to be. I must pay tribute to the University of Experience and the School of Hard Knocks for the valuable contributions you have made to my life path thus far. Stronger. Wiser. Blessed. My passion is to help others to reach their full potential. It is even more difficult to do that in one’s own life (it’s so easy giving advice to others, isn’t it?) but making a direct contribution or figuratively planting a seed and watching it take root in someone else’s life is deeply rewarding. We are on this planet to live good lives and to make a positive difference to our direct environment, wherever our feet may fall. Aim for the stars; never forget your roots. Be yourself, stay humble, be kind, be grateful, make love an action…not a word. My mission is to help people from all walks of life, gain financial independence, while caring for the world around us. Learn how to earn. Make sure you have a meal, an income, clothes, a home and good health. There is no planet B. I’m a big fan of renewable resources, organic gardens and farming and hugging a tree. Helping our paw-legged friends in shelters, finding furever homes much faster. Same for birds, horses, donkeys, circus prisoners and liberating zoos. I am an excellent chef in my kitchen 😊 and I love baking (to put it mildly). My cakes and tarts are wickedly good and not being gluten intolerant is still my highlight of the previous decade! My downtime is spent walking, jogging, going to the beach, horse riding and playing golf. With over 38 years’ combined experience, accumulated by time spent in the corporate world and having 3 businesses over the years, I have a wealth of experience to share and utilize. Words, in a personal bio, aren't plentiful. Not to me, at least. I feel that the chances of someone reading about what your opinion is of yourself and BELIEVING it is remote. The tough part is that you don't know me, nor I you, yet I'm trying to “convince” you that what I say is who I am as a person and that what I say is what it is. The eyes are windows to the soul…that isn't exactly happening here, and that sense cannot always be replaced through words alone. So, the moral of the story is that what I list below as my key character traits, strengths, weaknesses, achievements, experience, etc. is in reality simply just that. Traits: Dedicated, honest, loyal, trustworthy, tenacious, dependable, creative, methodical, sense of integrity, ethical, tough but fair, empathetic, lighthearted and friendly. Strengths: Comfortable in a team environment or working independently, management, skills utilization, delegation, human relations, conflict resolution, analysis, strategizing, implementation, problem-solving, business administration. Weaknesses: Impatience, self-critique, injustice and rudeness stirs my temper, being micro-managed, cheesecake. Experience: Sales, sales management, customer relationship management, business administration, directorship and general management of 3 x businesses previously owned/co-owned. Summary: A self-starter who gets what's required done, pronto. I am self-motivated, enjoy new challenges and try my best to excel at what's before me. I love working with people, as this is simply my passion.
Born and raised in South-Africa by a single mother in humble surroundings. Doing Taekwondo for years and attained my International black belt with the following principles, this was a part of my childhood that guided me into my adult life: Showing courtesy to others no matter what level of society labelled them; training continuously whether I was up for it or not; showing integrity, even when no one was watching; perseverance when I wanted to give up; self-control when it was difficult to compose myself and learning from my couch to have an indomitable Spirit. Finishing school it was expected of me to follow in the "Afrikaaner Man's" footsteps to have a job where you work many long hours a day, week in and week out, get your salary, sleep and repeat. My passion for music gave me the confidence to follow my heart and to head towards Cape Town for a short holiday, but I ended up staying here and studied for Audio Engineering, whilst completing my studies and gaining experience in the industry. COVID-19 affected the industry drastically, and I had decided to use my spare time productively by enrolling in courses such as Social Media marketing and Programming. I also started a small business where I rent out my sound equipment and host small gatherings and events. Helping friends with their business promotions and seeing how people enjoyed the events I have hosted, it made me realize that I have a passion to better others and their circumstances. Following my dreams against all odds lead me to where I am today and to appreciate every single moment by not wondering about the past or worrying about the future. Focusing on the task at hand and having it complete well within the deadline is what I strive to achieve, and I love learning and gaining knowledge along the way to further myself in everything and anything I get the opportunity for. I am ready for new challenges and know that having a healthy work balance will help me to reach my full potential.
Greetings to one and all. I am a child of the universe and I want to share that every day is a beautiful day. True, our emotions fluctuate but at some point during each day we will recognise that the day is a gift we have received and if we be true to ourselves we will smile and this will create feel good energy. We should practice this feel good energy and build on it so that each day it comes easier and earlier in the day, like a muscle it will grow. Become more evident and gather momentum and we will BE better for it. I believe in kindness and forgiveness towards others and myself. In a couple of months I will begin the first year of my seventh decade on planet Earth. I feel privileged to have lived long enough to grow. Twenty years ago I was facing a life threatening illness and not doing too well, I am a miracle. I believe we are all miracles. Some would differ. It can be a topic for discussion. I have extensive administrative experience - getting things organised, getting things done. With a stable track record, I am able to diversify within different industries. As part of a team I have a strong focus to resolve challenges and enjoy leaving any tasks I am busy with in a user friendly state (do unto others). I pride myself on my attention to detail & due diligence, going the extra mile in terms of improved efficiency and cost effectiveness. With strong English (both written and verbal) I am confident to communicate at all levels of an organisation, company or institution, with a strong emphasis on service delivery. My good communication skills help towards problem solving & interpersonal relationships. I enjoy taking on responsibility, it adds to my sense of well-being & purpose. I did a one year secretarial course in 1980 and my working life began from there. Living and learning life then became what I did, marriage, babies, etc. I guess I was lazy to further my qualifications, in hindsight I think I would have made a damn good surgeon LOL. Seriously, I have good eye, hand coordination, a good touch, and, consciously, I have become better at threading the needle. I believe strongly in being true to myself and honesty means much to me, honesty within and with others. And now, I am ready to start that next chapter in my career. I am blessed. I have over the years done various short courses including a deep tissue massage course so I am a certified masseuse however I only massage family and friends as I am no longer physically (strength and stamina) up to doing a job I am comfortable to charge for. Thought that was worth mentioning as it brings me pleasure to help others breathe and take time out. I have always worked in administrative support positions from Girl Friday to Executive PA and everything in between and in many different industries. My last couple of jobs have been from home (virtual) and in a new field namely customer service. This shift was challenging and I am proud to say I managed it pretty well. Working from home is what is necessary at this time given my current living circumstances. This change and the challenge that came with it reminded me that I have strong determination which is a very good thing. I am concerned for my granddaughter’s generation and what life will be like for them as adults, especially the environment they will find themselves in physically, mentally, emotionally. And, I would love to see the curricula in our educational systems adapting to educating our children to be more self-aware, mindful, engaging their senses, like an involuntary muscle, in the present moment and, to be able to guide their minds when it comes to EQ. I am an advocate for sports at a young age as this definitely develops our grit and stick-ability which comes in handy as we journey down the road with our name on it. I was a junior champion in both swimming and tennis, representing Zambia in both. Easy does it.

I have a positive outlook on life and I wish to share that positivity with you someday! Showing compassion for others in this industry and any industry, I believe will always get positive results. I am, because we are. Bound together in ways that are invisible, humanity is all about being one. Caring unconditionally, and sharing with everyone around us. Combining a salient philosophy of caring and sharing, with the strength of unity and community. We can determine the course of humanity and our destiny, by challenging the digital status quo. “I am, because we are. Together.”

In my last job, this passion led me to challenge myself daily and learn new skills that helped me to do better work. I am ambitious and driven. I thrive on challenges and constantly set goals for myself, so I have something to strive toward. I’m not comfortable settling, and I’m always looking for an opportunity to do better and achieve greatness. I am an excellent communicator. I pride myself on making sure people have the right information because it drives better results. Most business issues stem from poor communication, so I feel a responsibility to keep everyone on the same page. I am results-oriented, constantly checking in with the goal to determine how close or how far away we are and what it will take to make it happen. I find this pressure inspiring and a great motivator for the rest of the team. I am highly organized. I always take notes, and I use a series of tools to help myself stay on top of deadlines. I like to keep a clean workspace and create a logical filing method, so I’m always able to find what I need. I find this increases efficiency and helps the rest of the team stay on track, too. I’m a people-person. I love meeting new people and learning about their lives and their backgrounds. I can almost always find common ground with strangers, and I like making people feel comfortable in my presence.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. PETA educates policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promotes kind treatment of animals. PETA is an international nonprofit charitable organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, with affiliates worldwide. PETA opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. They also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. PETA has always been known for uncompromising, unwavering views on animal rights. They aren’t afraid to make the difficult comparisons, say the unpopular thing, or point out the uncomfortable truth, if it means that animals will benefit. The very heart of all of PETA’s actions is the idea that it is the right of all beings –human and nonhuman alike– to be free from harm. Our world is plagued with many serious problems, all of which deserve our attention. Cruelty to animals is one of them. PETA’s “Uncompromising Stands on Animal Rights” is an overview of what sets PETA apart. Their positions may be controversial, but they are always true to their driving mission: to stop animal abuse worldwide. We have the power to spare animals excruciating pain by making better choices about the food we eat, the things we buy, and the activities we support.

Established by a group of successful street performers, our origin story can still be seen in the roving and street performances for various community events and festivals which feature on the circus calendar. From here we have grown into a training and performance organisation which promotes excellence and innovation in circus arts, with community at its core. Over the years we have helped thousands of young people develop into confident, healthy individuals, and build life-long friendships. Many past students have gone on to pursue exciting careers as professional circus artists, often coming back home to teach masterclasses and assist our performance troupes. We provide term classes, holiday programs, social circus programs, outreach workshops, three performance troupe programs, scholarships and bursaries, circus parties, support for professional circus artists, subsidised outreach opportunities, corporate workshops, masterclasses and performance opportunities to people aged from 2 to 82.
At CirQuest, we believe circus is for everybody. We use a strengths-based approach and, because no two learners are the same, our teachers use many different kinds of instruction. Our ongoing teacher development and mentorship ensures that our dedicated, passionate teachers are always refining their skills. We celebrate the individual differences of all our students and help every CirQuest student to develop to their full potential. Circus includes a huge variety of different skills, using different apparatus in a wide range of ways. We categorise circus skills under four types: Acrobatics involve the rotation and movement of the whole body through space, and usually in contact with or with support from the ground. Acrobatics skills include handstands, tumbling, acrobalance and contortion. Aerials include trapeze, silks, rope, lyra (aerial ring) and other apparatus that are suspended off the ground. Object manipulations include apparatus that are moved by the hands and body, such as juggling, diabolo and hula-hoops. Equilibristic and locomotion skills involve the balance of the body and linear movement. Skills like riding a unicycle, stiltwalking, walking globe, and German Wheel fall under this category.

My name is Luis Guillermo Castro Martin. I am a philosopher specialized in philosophy of mind and language. In particular, I am interested in the nature of consciousness, and the way in which we experience and interpret the world. I started my studies at the Central University of Venezuela in 2006, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy (2011) and a master’s degree in logic and philosophy of science (2015). In 2012, the university offered me a position as a professor of philosophy and I taught several courses there until 2017, when I enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Genoa, Italy. I have also published several papers in philosophy journals and participated in various international events. In 2020, while writing my PhD thesis, I realized that I had been immersed in philosophy for too long and decided to use my experience to rejoin the real world. In my years studying philosophy, I have learned many things, but the most important is that the world is what we make of it, there is no ultimate truth, no final word. We create our reality. Knowledge has somehow separated us from others and nature, perhaps it can also reunite us. Although I was born in Venezuela, my family is a blending of different nationalities and traditions. I have lived and studied in different countries, which are all part of who I am and what I want to be. My actions define me, not my nationality or my origins. I do not believe in borders or limits; they are only in our minds. The sensation of not belonging can be liberating, once we realize that, by not belonging somewhere, we belong everywhere. I speak three languages (Spanish, English, and Italian) and I enjoy learning from other cultures, as well as transmitting the values of my own. I also enjoy music, sports and nature. I am the author of “Fragments of Mind” on Substack. A space for thinking outside the box, while discussing philosophical matters.
"Our costumes are handmade, our animals are trained by us, our sets are painted in the barns on our farm. We burn the midnight oil to conjure new visions for the show. It’s all we do. Circus is our job, our life, our love." Nell Gifford Giffords Circus is a magical village green circus that tours England from the first days of spring to the first glimpse of winter. It’s our hymn to homemade fun, excess and benign disruption. We want our show to move something in you, and to take just a little while to recover from. We want it, wish it and mean it with all of our hearts, because it is everything we believe about life and art and love. Giffords Circus is what we would all like to find if we were driving along a road, a glimpse of the tent with the words ‘Giffords Circus’ shining from the top, appearing mysteriously where it wasn’t the day before and might not be tomorrow. It is the intrigue that we would stop for and it is what we would make a pilgrimage for. It is how we travel back to our childhood and how we move forwards surrounded by music, loved ones and laughter. We wear our best clothes, and wellies and run away to the circus.
Circus PaZaz is the little circus with BIG fun! Entertainment for the whole family in the best ‘little’ bigtop circus in town! We provide self-contained children’s & family entertainment &“Have a go” circus skills workshops for all ages, perfect for any family event or festival. We also help many schools to fundraise at school fete’s & during the school week, teaching the children a fantastic show that they can perform themselves after school for friends & family. This creates a wonderful summer school event that children, parents & teachers will remember for years to come… It has been said that, Circus PaZaz are a perfect size show for a first time circus visit for many young children especially under 5’s and we think our little show will be a perfect introduction to the wonderful world of circus. Director & producer Matthew Indge or better known as Clown Zaz has been entertaining children & families since he was a just a kid himself & takes great pride in his work. Over the years he has made a lasting impression on many children & adults from all walks of life both here & Abroad. Since taking on the circus from Fred’s flying circus, Matt is proud and very happy to keep this tradition running for children & families to continue enjoying today.
We believe in a world where anything is possible. We understand that attending mainstream events can be difficult for children with additional needs or families in difficult circumstances, which is why we’ve created a tut-free zone; a show in which shouting out, dancing and jumping up and down are expected. At our circus, everyone is absolutely encouraged to let go of their worries, get involved, and be themselves. We bring all the fun of the circus to children and families that may have found this difficult in the past. We know that a circus is a family event that brings everyone closer, encourages creativity, and allows people to become stronger and more able to face life’s challenges head on. We tour the UK bringing the very best in circus talent from around the world and stage 148 incredible, animal-free shows every year. Children with disabilities, families on low incomes, those facing challenges such as domestic violence, bereavement or who may be living with a life-limiting condition. Every child, whoever they are, is free to be themselves at a Circus Starr Show – shout with joy, move to the music or appear centre stage! We do it because nearly 1.5 million UK families can’t afford a single day out together. We do it because 50% of families with disabled children say that the stigma and discrimination they face makes them feel isolated. We create a magical world, harnessing the power of the circus and invite families with all kinds of different needs to have fun together in a safe, welcoming and unique atmosphere. In the Spring and Autumn Circus Starr can be experienced under the starry canopy of our big top; when winter makes accessibility more difficult, we perform indoors – using existing buildings during the colder and more unpredictable months means that we never disappoint our deserving audiences. So, what we are is inclusive, exciting, non-judgemental, fun, accessible and magical and we bring all of this to you! Get excited, be excited and remember that excitement for years to come – we look forward to welcoming you.
Circus Mondao is only one of a handful of true traditional family circuses touring the towns and villages of Great Britain today. With us, we bring our large family of animals and human performers. Our aim is for our family to entertain your family.
The dream came true for a couple who became involved in a touring circus way back in 2001. It started with a chance visit to a fantastic circus in their local town. Such was Martin and Lynette's love and dedication of everything that is circus, they were offered a job with the same show soon after. Putting together several acts and becoming completely involved in all aspects, including the management side, gave Martin the knowledge and drive to set up his own show. Now in its twelfth successful year, Circus Ferrel is, and always has been, an all human show and although underpinned by centuries old British Circus traditions, it incorporates plenty of modern thinking which enhances the entertainment and often unusual and rarely seen acts. Circus Ferrel is based in South Norfolk and is available for events in Norfolk, Suffolk, North Essex and East Cambridgeshire.

The Blackpool Tower has stood tall over the Fylde Coast for 125 years. On 14th May 1894 The Blackpool Tower opened to the world, with Sir John Bickerstaffe, a former mayor of Blackpool at the helm. With a building full of attractions at its base, The Blackpool Tower was soon coined as ‘Wonderland of the World’! The Blackpool Tower Circus returns with a fantastic array of adventurous acts from all around the world delivering incredible death-defying stunts teamed with belly laughs aplenty from legendary clowns Mooky and Mr Boo. A Circus just wouldn't be the same without its clown. Interacting with the audience, bringing fun and laughter and generally linking the entire show together, the Circus Clown has the most important and demanding role. Down the years, many Clowns have starred in the famous Tower Circus Arena. One of the first was Bob Kellino, who performed from 1897 to 1903. Between the two World Wars, Doodles became the Tower's most popular Circus Clown, performing with his sidekick Austin and ringmaster George Lockhart. The famous Charlie Cairoli made his debut appearance at the Circus in 1939 and continued to make audiences laugh for over 40 years. The present incumbent of the role is the incredibly talented Mooky, son of Tower Circus Director & Producer Laci Endresz Snr and the third generation from a famous family of Clowns.
Big Kid Circus was founded in 2005 by Biliana and Kiril Kirilov, wife and husband. Kiril is the second generation of the circus family, whereas Biliana is the first in her family to join the circus. Biliana was 13 when she left to ‘run away’ with the circus, she has travelled to Cuba, USSR, Italy and Greece performing various circus skills and acrobatics. Kiril on the other hand attend school and graduated top of his class, while his parents were touring with the circus across the world. Fate brought Kiril and Bili together, they mutually decided the circus was the best path to lead to a happy and fulfilling life together. In 1999, they came to the UK as trapeze artistes where they worked for various circuses. However, in 2005 they decided it was time to start building their own legacy within the circus art industry. Bili is extremely passionate about producing and creating divers, inclusive and unique circus shows to cater for the whole family. Kiril plays a huge part in building the business aspect of the circus and ensuring its growth within the industry. Together they have successfully produced 16 annual tours in the UK. In 2014 Big Kid Entertainment expanded Big Kid Circus into South East Asia and opened up Great British Circus, and currently they are the only circus to have an annual tour in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Great British Circus is a UK company which promotes traditional British circus culture through the shows we produce. The aim is to share British Art with South East Asian audiences. The next generation of the Kirilov family are David, Julia and Nicole, who are the children of Biliana and Kiril. They have taken on the tradition and responsibility to continue the family legacy. David is an integral part of the logistics of the entire set up, he manages the team of employees to guarantee a smooth transition of the circus tour each week. He travels frequently between Asia and the UK to provide training and support to our teams in both regions. Julia is a graduate from Leeds Beckett University with a BA in Events Management. She also went on to complete her Master’s in Public Relations and Communications. Julia aims to grow the company and push for a contemporary extension to the circus art form and the social importance of the circus within today’s society. Julia plans to open her own show in 2022 which will promote body positivity and inclusivity, integrated with circus as a platform of art. Nicole is the youngest of the three, she is enjoying school, and she enjoys performing. When she grows up she would like to be a dancer, actress all wrapped around circus. Big Kid Circus would not be possible without the hard work and support it has from its employees. Being on tour 9 months of the year, we become family. Our performers and staff around the show work tirelessly to provide the highest quality circus performance available. We pride ourselves in being a divers and inclusive company, employing people from Cuba, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Morocco, Chile, Bulgaria, and many more. We believe a divers team leads to creative and unique thinking, which helps grow the company to become more inclusive and accepting within the community.
Bassline Circus is a high-octane circus company that has toured music festivals since 2003. Founded in 2001, and present every year since with a new production at major UK and European festivals, Bassline continues to harness Bass music's raw energy - with circus to match - alongside a new generation of physical, sonic and visual performers. The company currently focuses on running inclusive workshops, producing outdoor community events and creating touring productions such as: KID_X, [ON AIR] and Liquid Sky. Recent collabs include Bristol Pride, Tramway Theatre, Saffron Records, Feral Arts, Pride Without Borders, Fusion Festival (Germany) and Boomtown Fair. Bassline was formed by veteran sound systems from the European free party scene who joined forces with young circus performers who understood the link between traditional outcast travelling art forms and its modern incarnations. Though many from our original crew have moved on to other high profile UK festival projects, Bassline Circus always tries to keep that conscious vibe that links bass music and a spirit of resistance; and this goes far beyond music too! Our fearless and DIY approach to visual arts that seamlessly includes lush video-mapped sets, creative rigging and full-on venue management is made possible by a crew with deep understanding of The Collective principle that the Criminal Justice Bill was trying to suppress. And with such a loving and dedicated crew around us, we’re lucky now to attract young artists who want to connect with that core experience and help us keep it real with their own contributions. Education has historically been an important part of your company mission. Why’s that? Bassline Circus was born from the ashes of the European and British festival, free party and circus scenes, and despite many changes over the years, still believes in, and functions around a central ethos of Create-Innovate-Educate-Activate. We have a vision to help people see differently, think outside the box, challenge themselves and create their own realities. We at Bassline Circus believe that our purpose has been to provide opportunities and a platform for people of all backgrounds – especially those with less access to artistic activities – to take part in creative projects with circus, music and visual arts as their vehicle.
Interactive, exciting shows for all ages in our stripey little big top. So close you could touch (tho probably best you don't!). We also provide walkabout acts, workshops, street theatre and marquee hire.
Zip Zap is a vibrant and uniquely South African professional and social circus. Through the medium of circus arts, we inspire and empower young people with skills for life! Zip Zap was born from a simple dream, a tree, a trapeze bar and a rusty old truck 29 years ago. Established by South African born Brent van Rensburg and his French wife, Laurence Estève, their dream was to use the circus as a tool to bridge socio-economic gaps and to inspire and empower young people to build a new culture of peaceful co-existence in South Africa, inspired by the late Nelson Mandela. Zip Zap Circus is a not for profit social school that was founded in Cape Town in 1992, to inspire young people and help build a new culture of peaceful coexistence in South Africa. Working with a diverse community of children from all backgrounds, Zip Zap helps children to ‘dare to dream’ and learn to make those dreams a reality. Zip Zap’s programmes are all free to participants, with financial and material support coming from individuals, organisation, corporations and foundations. In South Africa and the world, Zip Zap is recognised across Governments, Ministries of Education, Tourism, Arts & Culture and private societies, as a major contributor to the development within the iconic ‘Mother City’ and providing sustainability of the circus arts in South Africa.
It all started on 24 March 2005 in a hired tent that could seat 150 people at the blue route mall in Tokai, Cape Town. At the young age of only 21 David Mclaren followed his passion and childhood dream and started the Mclaren circus. Mclaren circus was built upon the nostalgic memories of a childhood dream to someday reintroduce the magic culture and variety of a traditional big-top travelling circus through shows that are staged in the same wholesome family spirit that enchanted audiences for centuries. A delightful band of artists trained by a circus school in Cape Town assisted David with the first shows in 2005. David was the ringmaster and his older brother Duncan performed clowning sketches. The circus was funded entirely by David Mclaren. During this first year, shows were held during school holidays. At the end of 2005, nine months after the launch, it was decided that the show would be rolled out to the countryside. In 2006 David invested in a larger 22 m x 28 m red and yellow marquee, manufactured in Cape Town. David set off down the garden route with two caravans, a trailer, a bakkie, his animals and artists. The now famous red and yellow marquee could be seen trekking all over the country, mainly to small towns and villages with one day stands. The last show before returning to Cape Town for the holiday season was in Paarl at the end of 2006. After careful consideration, it was decided that the Mclaren circus would tour the western and Eastern Cape provinces. An 8-ton truck, two camels, four ponies, and two lion cubs were acquired for the tour. It was an investment well worth it because this tour proved to be a great success. Once back in Cape Town, 2009 was an historical year for the Mclaren circus. It had now become necessary to invest in a bigger tent, and the beloved red and yellow marquee made way for a bigger white and red four-pole big top. The circus acquired more trucks and started touring the whole of Southern Africa. As 2010 rolled in, the circus continued to tour South Africa, playing all towns it came across, no town was ever too big or two small. The circus grew bigger and better and as more trucks, a ticket office and more animals were acquired. David was indeed living his childhood dream. But with all the magic, love and laughter came tears in 2011. In the early hours of a Sunday morning in wWtbank a freak storm hit the circus and caused a blow down. David stood helpless at his caravan as the freak storm blew down his circus tent, causing mayor damage to the tent, king poles, equipment and seating inside the tent. The storm was over within a few minutes but left the circus in devastation. As the news spread through the circus world, David received calls from other circuses offering help and assistance. The Mclaren circus staff were amazing and all got up in the early hours of that morning to assist David. But the show had to go on and the tent, seating, equipment and king poles were all repaired within 3 days. The show was back up and it was business as always for the mclaren circus. 2012 became another historical year for the Mclaren circus. A new 4-pole big top was purchased, a state of the art 12 m canteen joined the colourful fleet. The new 4-pole big top can also be transformed into a 6-pole tent, playing bigger venues and cities. David Mclaren is now 35 years old and is still driven by his passion and love for circus to keep the magic and wonder circus alive on the continent. Mclaren circus is unique and one of a kind now being the only traditional travel circus left in Southern Africa that still tours all nine provinces on an annual or bi-annual basis The circus, now a household name, still tours Southern Africa like in the beginning, on their own steam without any sponsorship or funding. It's you, the public and South African circus fans that keep the Mclaren circus going and help us provide smiles to thousands of children of all ages every day by bringing entertainment to their doorsteps. The Mclaren circus management and staff would like to thank you all for buying circus tickets over the years and thus supporting the Mclaren circus to become Africa’s biggest and best circus.
